Tamzin Lurlay is a ceramics artist in the greater Bay Area creating one-of-a-kind functional art pieces. After finishing her undergraduate with an art minor, it would be 30 years before she returned to the artistic discipline, inspired by a ceramics course at a local community college. Initially trained on the wheel, the unique pressures of creating during the coronavirus pandemic led her to discover hand building, which became a foundational tenet of her artistic identity. Though the initial goals of her practice were technique mastery and refining and developing a person style, in 2023 she began selling her work in local artisan markets including West Coast Craft, one of California’s premier arts and crafts venues. In her work, Tamzin joyfully explores the intimacy that can develop between a person and the utilitarian objects they use every day, blurring the line between art and object in posing the question, “can everyday objects be art ?” Today each piece she creates is a reflection of her curiosity about the world around us, a unique blend of her practicality and creativity, and an homage to the beauty of everyday things.
